Outplayed by Constant Lestienne in the first two sets of the opening round, Karen Khachnov bounced back to win the last three sets and seal a 3-6, 1-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 victory.

A semifinalist at the U.S. Open last year and the Australian Open this year, Khachanov has never been beaten in the first round at Roland Garros and he maintained that record in his seventh appearance as well. In t=his last six attempts only once has he fallen in the second round, while reaching at least the fourth round in the rest of the five.

Khachanov’s best in the Paris major has been a quarterfinal finish in 2019.

The Russian will be hoping to at least match his previous best this year. In his opening round, Khachanov served 15 aces and 57 winners, while he also made 50 unforced errors.

Ranked no. 11 in the world, Khachanov improved his season record to 20-10 and he is 7-4 on clay.

Albot Sees Off American Wild Card

Continuing his promising run in Paris, Radu Albot moved into the second round of the clay court major for the fourth time in his seventh try.

Albot, who lost all three of his second round matches previously, will be aiming to reach the third round at Roland Garros for the first time.

The Moldovan had qualified for the main draw this year with wins over Vit Kopriva, Ryan Peniston and Camilo Ugo Carabelli respectively. While he won the first qualifier in straight sets, he had to score comeback wins in the next two matches.

On Monday, he kept the momentum going, holding off American wild card Patrick Kypson in a four-set first round contest.

The world no. 111 Albot held a staggering 26 break points in the match and he converted 10 of them. In contrast, his opponent held nine with Albot saving four of them. Albot did double fault seven times and made 27 unforced errors, but he struck 44 winners to win 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in two hours and 57 minutes.

Albot is now 13-6 on clay across levels and 21-17 overall this year.

Khachanov has a good record in Roland Garros; he is also in fine form this year and should not have much trouble in dispatching Albot.
