Liudmilla Samsonova v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Head to Head

Samsonova Routs Volynets

Seeded 15th in the tournament, Samsonova had come into her first round match against Katie Volynets as a 3/10 favourite but not too many expected her to put on the kind of superlative performance she finally did.

Samsonova needed a mere 69 minutes to send Volynets packing 6-0, 6-1 in their first round encounter to help her win her first ever main draw match in this tournament.

After having saved three break-points in the very first game of the match, Samsonova forged ahead with two successive breaks of serves. The Russian saved another break-point before winning the set with a third break of serve.

In the second, Samsonova was way better with her serving as she won 16 of her 21 first service points and in turn broke Volynets two more times. In doing so, she had registered her fourth win on clay for the season but she also has three defeats.

Can she now put an end to Pavlyuchenkova’s comeback?

Pavlyuchenkova Blows Fruhvirtova Away

Linda Fruhvirtova is a talented youngster and facing up to someone like Pavlyuchenkova, who has fallen outside of the top 300 would have given her a hope of getting through the first round.

Unfortunately for Fruhvirtova, Pavlyuchenkova was at her best on court – much like she had been in 2021 when she made the final here – and allowed her opponent no chance here.

The Russian needed an hour and 12 minutes to seal a 6-2, 6-2 win over Fruhvirtova, racing away to 5-0 and 4-0 in the two sets respectively. While she was then broken once apiece in both, there wasn’t any looking back for Pavlyuchenkova who completed the win with much ease.

This follows a better showing from Pavlyuchenkova in each of her three previous tournaments on clay, having reached the quarterfinal in Strasbourg and winning her openers in Madrid and Rome before that.

Can she stall Samsonova’s progress?

Samsonova v Pavlyuchenkova Prediction and Tip

Samsonova’s form does not inspire a lot of confidence but it must be quickly added that Pavlyuchenkova is still is in very early days of her comeback. Which is why we could see a keen tussle that could also go to the third set.

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
