Donna Vekic v Bernarda Pera Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two which came in Abu Dhabi in 2021 and Pera had won that three-setter.

Vekic Has Very Little Trouble against Yastremska

Having entered the French Open on the back of a 3-3 win-loss record on clay this year, there were some question-marks around Vekic’s performance in her opener here. She was an 11/20 favourite, sure, but against a player who has fallen to 144th in the world, those are some seriously long odds.

Which is why Vekic’s straight-set win over Yastremska would be a huge relief for the Croat.

In a match lasting an hour and 27 minutes, Vekic came through 6-2, 7-5 to enter the second round for the second year running.

The first set was a cakewalk with Vekic breaking her opponent twice to wrap things up. It was in the second set that things turned around for Yastremska who kept herself in the contest by getting the better of Vekic’s serve thrice.

This took them to 4-4 before a fourth break of serve for Vekic allowed her a chance to serve for the match which she did with ease.

Things could get slightly more difficult in round two though.

Pera Pushes Past Kontaveit

Rather interestingly, Pera also needed the same amount of time as Vekic did in her opener, as she came through against Anett Kontaveit in the first round.

Pera, who has made the second round at Roland-Garros just twice before in her career and never beyond that, saved two set-points in the opening set before winning 7-6 (6), 6-2.

The American was down 4-2 in the first set before she broke back to get to level terms. The following tie-breaker saw Pera take a 4-2 lead but Kontaveit retaliated with four points in a row to earn a couple of set-points.

This time it was Pera who won four successive points to grab the set before she came through easily in the second set with three breaks of serves.

Pera had earlier made the quarterfinal of the Strasbourg Open in the week prior to this French Open in what was her best showing on clay this year. Can she put Vekic to test here?

Vekic v Pera Prediction and Tip

This is a match between two players with ample quality but having not done a lot on clay this season. Pera might hold the edge here but we think we could see a three-setter here.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/5
