Norrie Made to Sweat by Paire
Such has been Benoit Paire’s form, or lack thereof that he had entered his first round encounter as an 11/2 underdog against Norrie. That Norrie needed five sets to come through against his French opponent will be a cause for concern.
More so because of some of the stats on show in the match.
Norrie managed just 38 winners to his opponent’s 70 and it was only because of Paire’s high unforced error count that the Brit managed to keep himself in the encounter. There’s only other worry for Norrie – his serve.
He faced a whopping 20 break-points in the encounter and was broken six times as well. And sure he got the better of Paire’s serve eight times but he was up against a player ranked 149th – you would expect such an opponent to struggle with his serving.
Norrie now faces another Frenchman who has fallen off the tennis cliff in recent times because of his own fitness issues. And he will hope he doesn’t repeat the lacklustre showing from the opening round here.

Pouille Makes it Two in Two against Rodionov
Pouille had faced Jurij Rodinov just three days ago in the third qualifying round. The Frenchman came through from a set down in that match to make the main draw but as it turned out, Rodionov also qualified for the tournament as a lucky loser.
As luck would have it, the two clashed again in the first round and for the second time in three days, Pouille crashed into Rodionov’s party.
And this time around it was a way easier win for the 675th-ranked player, who defeated Rodionov 6-2, 6-4, 6-3. The match lasted less than two hours and saw Pouille save all of the six break-points he faced.
In turn he overcame his opponent’s serve on four occasions and that was enough to see him through to first main draw win of the season. Can he now show a similar sparkle in his performance against a player ranked way higher than Rodionov?
Norrie v Pouille Prediction and Tip
It will be the second Frenchman in a row whom Norrie faces and this time around it could get slightly easier now that he’s gotten to used the conditions. Backing Norrie to win again but again, he could lose a set.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 4/9
- Moderate Risk Tip: Over 36.5 games in the match: 5/6
