Magdalena Frech kickstarted her 2023 French Open campaign with a resounding 6-1, 6-1 rout of the Chinese veteran, doubles prodigy Shuai Zhang. The 25-year-old Pole needed just 49 minutes to deliver the tennis masterclass, which featured her capitalising on Zhang’s shoddy play.
Frech has improved her record for the year to 17-15 – a good chunk of which she has gathered on clay courts (10-4).
The current World No. 88 most recently made it to round two in Rome after clearing the qualifiers. In a similar manner, she reached the same stage in Madrid as well. Between the two, Magdalena delivered a quarterfinal stint in Saint-Malo Challenger.
After struggling to move past the qualifiers in the first couple of months, Frech found some solace in Indian Wells and Miami, reaching the mid-rounds after clearing the prelims.

21-year-old Russian Kamilla Rakhimova enjoyed a comfortable start as well in Paris, beating Czech teenager Sara Bejlek 6-0, 6-3.
Like Frech, Rakhimova, too, has spent a good chunk of the season settling for early losses in WTA tournaments – with some exceptions. The #82-ranked player last played in Rabat, where she fell to Alycia Parks in round two. She did, however, make it to the semifinal in Bogota.
Apart from this, she also won the ITF Irapuato – which she followed with a round two showing in WTA Monterrey (as a qualifier).
Throughout the year, Rakhimova has bagged 19 wins while losing 16 matches. While that may not amount to much if she were up against a top 20 player, against Magdalena, that should give her enough to put up a fight.
Frech v Rakhimova Prediction and Tip
Not a whole lot separates the two players, but between the two, Frech has the edge owing to slightly better form on clay. Of course, Rakhimova has shown some promise time and again that puts her in solid contention here. Interestingly, neither of the two have ever made it past the round of 64 in the Paris Slam, so whoever comes out on the top will set a personal record.
