Marcos Giron v Jiri Lehecka Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came in the qualifiers of the Paris Masters last year and Lehecka had won it in straight sets.

Giron in a Bizarre Win over Medjedovic

19-year-old Hamad Medjedovic was coming off three successive wins in the qualifiers and had already hit a career-high ranking of 168th in the world thanks to his performances on the Challenger circuit.

Even the match odds suggested there wasn’t too much to choose between Medjedovic and Giron with the American starting out only a slight favourite.

In the end, Giron needed four sets to come through but the match still lasted a mere hour and 55 minutes with the American bagelling his opponent in two of those sets. Medjedovic was broken a whopping eight times in the match while Giron faced two break-points and losing both.

This was Giron’s sixth win on clay for the season to go with his five defeats. That’s not such a bad record to have for a 75th-ranked player and he will now look to add on to that win count here.

Lehecka Surprise for Struff

Lehecka had had a solid start to the season but was coming into this tournament off a four-match losing streak. This included a first round defeat at the Turin Challenger just a few days before the start of the French Open.

Which is why it was no surprise that he started off a second favourite against the man in form and the Italian Masters runner-up, Jan-Lennard Struff.

Three hours and 16 minutes later, Lehecka had carved out a five-set win over Struff, defeating the German 7-5, 1-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. While Lehecka lost his own serve five times in the encounter and both won a similar 60-61% points on their serve, the difference between the two came to light in the final set.

It was there that Lehecka drove a wedge between his own performance and Struff’s, breaking him twice and clinching it easily.

Can he now get himself the scalp of Giron as well?

Giron v Lehecka Prediction and Tip

As far as consistency on clay goes, it’s Giron who has shown he can handle such situations better. Lehecka is highly talented but it does look he is still trying to find his feet on this surface.
