Tiafoe Eases Past Krajinovic

Tiafoe has been steady without showing a lot of dazzle this season on clay having entered the French Open on a 6-3 win-loss record for the year.

And having made it to the second round of this tournament just once before this from his eight previous attempts, it would have been understandable if he didn’t feel his most confident self coming into this year’s edition.

All of that would have gone to the back-burner when the American carved out a straightforward win over Filip Krajinovic in his opener. In a match lasting two hours and 10 minutes, Tiafoe defeated his Serbian opponent, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 to make it to the second round for only the second time at French Open.

Tiafoe faced six break-points but his strong first serves – he won 82% of those – ensured he would save all of those while breaking his opponent four times.

He will now be up against a player who has been rather inconsistent with his results in this career but is coming off some solid form recently.

Karatsev Too Good for Popyrin

Alexei Popyrin would have thought he had a chance against Karatsev, especially given the erratic nature of the Russian’s results. That, however, did not hold good as Karatsev continued with his momentum from Munich and Madrid to get past his Aussie opponent in four sets.

After having begun the clay season with opening round defeats at the San Remo Challenger and Marrakesh Open, Karatsev looked to have turned things around when he made the semifinal at the Madrid Masters. That included a win over Daniil Medvedev and Alex de Minaur there.

Here, he needed to come through three qualifying wins to make the main draw where he usurped Popyrin in four sets.

Karatsev was on court for three hours before winning 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-2 to enter the second round. He was broken just once – all of the five break-points he faced came in the second set – and overcame his opponent’s serve on six occasions.

Can he now turn the screws on Tiafoe?

Tiafoe v Karatsev Prediction and Tip

It’s interesting to note that despite Karatsev’s inconsistencies on tour, there’s nothing to choose between the two according to bookmakers. Both are 10/11 to win this and I think Tiafoe in full flow could trump his opponent here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 3.5 sets in the match: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Tiafoe to win: 10/11
