Maia Routs Maria
Beatriz Haddad Maia started her Roland Garros campaign on a solid note, beating Tatjana Maria 6-0, 6-1 in just 66 minutes. It wasn’t the most clinical performance from the Brazilian that was at play here – at least as much as Tatjana’s poor day at work.
With this, Maia is now in round two for the second consecutive season. One more win and she would have delivered her personal-best results in the Slam.
The current World No. 14 has built some momentum – notably by delivering a quarterfinal run in Rome recently. She lost to Anhelina Kalinina in three sets – two of which went to tie-breaks. Maia had reached the same stage in Stuttgart as well – but that luck did play its part as she benefited from the mid-match retirements of Martina Trevisan and Elena Rybakina.
In addition to similar results in Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Adelaide, the 26-year-old is 18-11 in 2023. On the doubles tour, she won the Madrid Open with Victoria Azarenka and was a runner-up in Indian Wells Open with Laura Siegemund.

Shnaider Moves Past Marino
19-year-old Russian Diana Shnaider defeated veteran Canadian Rebecca Marino in the first round. It was not much of a test as the teenager won the match 6-3, 7-5.
Her last major was the Aus Open, where, by her standards, she did a superb job of reaching round two (as a qualifier).
The youngster picked up the heat on clay, but she did stay away from participating in the big WTA 1000 events in Madrid and Rome.
Credit where it is due, in Charleston 500, Diana beat Alycia Parks and Veronika Kudermetova before losing to Paula Badosa in round three. Next was the ITF Charlottesville, where she was a quarterfinalist.
As a junior player, Shnaider won three Grand Slams in doubles – the most recent being the US Open 2022 with Lucie Havlickova. She later topped that with her first WTA 125 trophy – coming in Montevideo Open.
Maia v Shnaider Prediction and Tip
Shnaider holds promise, but her lack of experience will not make things easy for her. Maia looks confident, is in decent form, and has got some traction to her game. Expect the seeded star to win this one comfortably.
Tips:
- Low-Risk Tip: Maia to win 2-0: 4/9
- Moderate Risk Tip: Over 18.5 games in the match: 10/11
