Yoshihito Nishioka v Max Purcell Head to Head
Two previous meetings, both on the Challenger circuit have resulted in both winning one apiece. Purcell’s win came on clay in 2018.

Nishioka Sends Wolf Packing
In one of the best comeback wins of the tournament so far, Nishioka defeated JJ Wolf after being two sets down in his opener.
Nishioka, who has never gone beyond the second round at the French Open in all his previous attempts, was on a three-match losing streak and was 2-4 on clay for the season before his opener.
And when he fell 6-1, 6-3 down in 75 minutes, the writing looked to be on the wall.
Except that Nishioka is a fighter and he showed it once again by breaking Wolf once in the third set, thrice in the fourth and three more times in the fifth set to win it. He grabbed a 1-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 victory in nearly three and a half hours.
That leaves him with a solid chance of making it to the third round as he takes on a player who has himself never had a great run on clay.

Purcell Surprises Fellow Aussie Thompson
Having entered his opening round match at 11/10 odds to surprise Jordan Thompson, Purcell needed four sets in the end to win his maiden main draw match at the French Open.
Purcell was on court for two hours and 52 minutes to register his 7-5, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 win despite both players getting broken three times in the match.
That was down to Purcell’s consistency as opposed to Thompson struggling to maintain his levels from the second set elsewhere in the match. Interestingly, Purcell hit 49 winners to his opponent’s 29 but his unforced errors count of 42 was also a lot higher than Thompson’s 23.
Where the match turned in Purcell’s favour is he took control of the crucial points in the match.
Like was the case in the first set when Purcell converted the first break-point he got as Thompson served to stay in the set at 5-6. Or in the third when Purcell got just two break-points and converted one of them or in the fourth when he did exactly the same as he had in the third.
Can he now trouble Nishioka?
Nishioka v Purcell Prediction and Tip
While Nishioka is a favourite for us too, we believe Purcell has shown enough of his prowess to reckon he can put up a fight. Which is why we expect him to win a set at least.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Purcell to win a set: 4/11
- Moderate Risk Tip: Over 0.5 tie-breakers in the match: 1/1
- High Risk Tip: Purcell to win: 11/5
