Coco Gauff v Julia Grabher Head to Head

They haven’t played on tour, but Coco Gauff brings a 1-0 head-ot-head advantage beating Grabher at the Billie Jean King Cup in mid April.

Gauff Survives Early Scare Against Masarova

In what was built as a potential banana peel considering her opponent’s prowess on clay, Coco Gauff stumbled briefly before prevailing in three sets against Spain’s Rebeka Masarova.

The pair had earlier met in Auckland on hard courts where Gauff dropped just two games to win the final, but much has changed since then with Masarova now a top-100 player and recently reached a second final of the season at the W100 ITF in Oeiras, Portugal.

Masarova played solidly from the baseline and was clutch in saving eight break points in the first set. She raced to a 3-0 lead early on and never relinquished that momentum eventually wrapping up the set 6-3.

But Masarova wasn’t going to keep up her top-tier level for long, and Gauff never spurned more opportunities from the second set onwards.

The American first broke Masarova for a 3-1 lead in the second set. And quickly grabbed a double-break advantage before restoring parity.

The third set was one-way traffic with Gauff taking three of her six break points to establish daylight between herself and Masarova.

Grabher Records Maiden Main Draw Win

Three days after finishing runner-up in the Rabat Open, Julia Grabher returned to winning ways, celebrating a maiden main draw win in a Grand Slam.

The feisty Austrian defeated the experienced Arantxa Rus 6-2 6-3 despite going into the match as a sizable underdog.

Grabher used her heavy forehand to move Rus around the court and had a better shot placement throughout.

Despite having a less pacey serve, Grabher won more points behind both her first and second serves in the first set, although she’ll need to cut down on her nine double faults in the match to stand a chance of upsetting Gauff.

Grabher was rewarded with her risk-tolerant approach, firing 20 winners, twice as much as that Rus managed in the afternoon, but it also came with 27 unforced errors.

The 26-year-old saved six of seven break points she faced in the match, which proved pivotal as she would break the Dutchwoman five times.

Gauff v Grabher Prediction and Tip

Grabher is 26 but she hasn’t had moments like the one she experienced on Tuesday and will play second fiddle to Gauff who is already a more established big-stage expert.

Gauff needed some sort of headstart and losing a set to Masarova was the best thing that could happen to her. Expecting the American to channel her focus right from the off here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Gauff to win: 1/8
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 19.5 games in the match: 8/11
