Andreescu Wins Battle of Slam Champions

Bianca Andreescu mounted a thrilling comeback to defeat Victoria Azarenka 2-6 6-3 6-4 in two and half hours. She advances into the second round stage of the French Open for the second year in a row.

In a match pitting two former Grand Slam champions, it was Azarenka who set the tone, rushing to take a one-set lead by breaking the Andreescu serve twice in a flash.

The Belarusian grabbed an early break at the start of the second set. But momentum ebbed and flowed each other’s way far too many times. It was of great credit that Andreescu managed to hang on, even under a barrage of pressure of monstrous hitting from the aggressive Azarenka.

After surviving the fifth game of the second set, Andreescu dialed in and broke Azarenka twice to edge ahead 5-3. She saved a couple of break points while serving to level, but got there in the end.

The third set was just as dramatic as the second and it only featured one break of serve which Andreescu converted in the third game.

Andreescu had a rough time closing it out at 5-4, spurning three match points from 40-0, but produced some big serves under pressure to escape. And when Azarenka netted the final backhand, an overjoyed Andreescu could not contain her delight.

Navarro Prevents An Andreeva Double Celebration

After 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva pulled through in the expected fashion, older sister Erika had the chance to join her in the next round.

But that didn’t happen as the in-form Emma Navarro did enough to complete a 6-2 3-6 6-4 win.

Navarro took the best part of two hours for the win, but things could have gotten complicated had it not been for a slow start by Erika Andreeva.

The Russian teenager was overcome by nerves and had trouble holding her serve in the first set, winning 44% first-serve points and committing 11 unforced errors. Her numbers improved substantially in the second set, landing 75% of first serves and winning 52% of those points. She would also break Navarro’s serve three times along the way.

But it was 22-year-old Navarro who has won a jaw-dropping 25 matches on red clay this season who held her nerve and showed remarkable resilience in the third set. She rallied from 0-3 down and won six of the next seven games.

Andreescu v Navarro Prediction and Tip

What a massive opportunity this is turning out to be for Bianca Andreescu. With Krejcikova out of the picture and accounting for the elimination of another Grand Slam champion in Azarenka, this section is wide open for her to make at least the fourth round.
