Seyboth Wild Stuns Medvedev
Thiago Seyboth Wild pulled off a massive first round upset as the Brazilian knocked out the second seed Daniil Medvedev in a five-set thriller on Tuesday.
Seyboth Wild, was playing his first tour-level match of the season while Medvedev came into the contest as one of the most dominant forces on the men’s tour this year, having won five titles from six finals. What’s more, the Russian was in excellent form on clay and had won his maiden clay court title in Rome in his last action before heading to Roland Garros.
There were huge expectations from Medvedev this season, but Seyboth Wild had some other ideas.
The qualifier came back from an early break down to level the opening set and then edged Medvedev in the tiebreak to take a 1-0 lead. He could have gone 2-0 up but he missed out on two set points in the second set tiebreak allowing Medvedev to level the match at one-set apiece. Seyboth Wild was outplayed in the third but the 23-year-old didn’t give up and bounced back in the fourth to force the deciding set.
In the final set, Seyboth Wild went up a break twice but Medvedev pulled it back on both occasions. With the set balanced at 3-3, the Brazilian broke once again and then held on to the lead to score a 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (6-8), 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win in four hours and 15 minutes.
Seyboth Wild, who won two Challenger titles from three finals this year, had qualified for his maiden French Open main draw with wins over Antoine Bellier, Ričardas Berankis and Dominik Koepfer.
Can he build on his first round win with a win in the second round as well?

Pella Battles Past Halys
World no. 423 Guido Pella upset world no. 88 and local favourite Quentin Halys in a dramatic five-setter on Tuesday.
The Argentine got a break in the very first game of the match and he held on to the advantage to take the opening set. He squandered a set point in the second set tiebreak allowing the Frenchman to draw level. Halys then started dominating the proceedings as he took the third set with ease.
There were no breaks of serve in the final two sets and Pella won both of them in the tiebreaks to win the match 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (10-4).
Halys hit 88 winners and 19 aces in the match, but he also double faulted 11 times and made 89 unforced errors. Pella, meanwhile made just 42 unforced errors and struck 50 winners.
With the win, Pella is 5-7 this season and 3-4 on clay. This is the seventh time in his eighth Roland Garros appearance that he has reached the second round, but he has never made it to the round of 32. Can the 33-year-old do it this year?
