Martic Overturns Rogers

While starting out as a favourite against the seeded Shelby Rogers, Martic needed to overcome a strong start from her opponent before quelling the American’s challenge.

Martic won 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in just over two hours to register her first main draw victory on clay this season other than her Madrid Open performances.

In Madrid, Martic had made the quarterfinals on the back of wins over Laura Siegemund, Anna Kalinskaya and Barbora Krejcikova but other than that she hasn’t done too much of note in clay court competitions.

The Linz Open runner-up shrugged off three breaks of serve in the match to race away with the win in the second half of the encounter. For about an hour and a quarter, Martic looked like she was in a battle but once she broke Rogers to go 4-2 ahead in the second set there was no looking back.

A former quarterfinalist in this tournament, Martic had won her first match at Roland-Garros since 2020. Can she double that win count here?

Sorribes Tormo Lives up to Her Favourite Tag against Burel

She was once ranked 32nd in the world but Sorribes Tormo has fallen by about 100 places and struggling to earn wins in WTA main draw.

Her form has been quite worrisome as she looks to return to full fitness this season, having missed the first months of tennis in 2023.

Sorribes Tormo did make the quarterfinal of the Bogota Open but since then has been forced to play in two ITF tournaments even as she’s lost in the first round at the Madrid Open, Italian Open and even in the WTA 125 competition in Reus.

Which is why a 7-6 (0), 6-2 win over Clara Burel in the first round here will give her some confidence, not to mention a few more ranking points which will help her get closer to the top 100 spot.

Can she now usurp Martic, which might not be that difficult either as the winning odds (1/1) also show.

Martic v Sorribes Tormo Prediction and Tip

Sorribes Tormo’s performance against Burel should give her some hope but we still reckon she is some away from winning matches regularly at the highest level. Backing Martic to edge this.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Martic to win: 8/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Martic to win AND Over 21.5 games in match: 21/20
