This will be the third meeting between the two players and the head-to-head tally is currently tied at 1-1. They met just two weeks back in the same round in the Indian Wells Open.
Andreescu won that match in three sets.
Andreescu – A Star in the Making
At just 18 years of age, Andreescu has achieved a lot more than the majority of experienced players on the tour. The Canadian won her first WTA title this past Sunday in the Indian Wells Open, defeating Angelique Kerber in the final in three sets.
That win also took her to the career-best singles ranking as the World No. 24. Her performance over the course of the last couple of weeks or so has been absolutely brilliant. Andreescu delivered some impressive victories over Dominika Cibulkova, Garbine Muguruza, Elina Svitolina, and Qiang Wang.
Earlier this season, she had a similar run in Auckland too, where she lost in the final. However, on her way to the final, she moved past Carolina Wozniacki and Venus Williams. She has been simply exceptional and it is hard to imagine that just last year, she was spending her time on the ITF circuit, building her form.
Begu’s Unexciting Start to the Year
So far this season, Begu’s win-loss record has been 6-5. She had a good run in Budapest where she lost in the quarterfinal to Marketa Vondrousova but apart from that, the World No. 70 hasn’t been that impressive.
Following her first-round defeat in Indian Wells, the Romanian participated in a WTA 125K Series event in Guadalajara where she lost to Sara Errani in the opening match. She has had similar runs at the start of the season too, losing early in Shenzhen and the Australian Open.

Given the form Andreescu is in right now, she is most definitely going to start as the favourite here. While fatigue may be a factor here, it shouldn’t trouble the young Canadian so much.
