Stearns Stuns Ostapenko

As we had discussed in our preview to this second round match between Stearns and Jelena Ostapenko, it was never going to be easy for the pre-match favourite and world number 17 Ostapenko.

Stearns had, after all, come into the tournament on the back of a markedly improved performance over the entire season and had 31-8 win-loss record for 2023 over all levels of matches.

And that’s exactly how things went for Stearns as she carved out a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 win over Ostapenko in a second round match lasting an hour and 44 minutes. This followed her straight-set win over Katerina Siniakova in her opener.

The American, who has risen to a career-best ranking of 69th, broke Ostapenko twice in the first set but then lost her own serve three times in the second. Just when one thought Ostapenko had overturned the momentum against her inexperienced opponent, Stearns retaliated with two breaks of serves to grab the shock win.

Can she now move forward?

Kasatkina Overpowers Vondrousova

In what turned out to be a rather one-sided win for a player who had gone into the encounter as a whopping 2/1 underdog, Kasatkina sent former French Open runner-up Marketa Vondrousova packing from the tournament.

Kasatkina needed a mere hour and 44 minutes to register her 6-3, 6-4 win as she came away unscathed despite facing a whopping 12 break-points.

The difference between the two players turned out to be exactly – Kasatkina was broken just two times from those 12 chances while she got herself 11 chances and got the better of her opponent’s serve on four occasions.

The two traded breaks of serves in the very first two games of the match before Kasatkina earned herself a decisive break in the eighth game, breaking the Czech to love.

In the second, this repeated itself over the first four games which led them to be tied at two games apiece, but again a break of serve in the ninth game proved to be the deciding point of the encounter.

Kasatkina, who had made the semifinal of this event last season, had earlier sent Jule Niemeier out in a similar fashion. Can she now get the better of the relatively inexperienced, but in form Stearns?

Kasatkina v Stearns Prediction and Tip

While Kasatkina has shown she can be discounted only at one’s peril, she will also be up against a player in the form of her life. We could end up seeing a three-setter here.

Tips:
