Carlos Alcaraz v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head
Alcaraz and Shapovalov have never faced off before this.

Alcaraz Needs Four Sets against Daniel
After having eased past Flavio Cobolli in the first round, Alcaraz looked like he was on his way to another straightforward win in the second against Taro Daniel.
He eased past Daniel in the first set with two breaks of serves but all of sudden things changed in the second. Alcaraz was broken early in the set and failed to break back – earning just one break-point in the set and frittering it away.
And while Alcaraz corrected that anomaly with successive breaks of serves in the third set and three more in the fourth, he did lose his serve once more in the encounter.
In the end, a two and a half hour battle for his 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win might not sound too much of a problem but Alcaraz will hope he can take lessons from here into the latter rounds. He is a title contender and would have liked to come through without dropping a set but at the same it’s still early stages of his career.
He now faces an opponent who isn’t much of a clay-courter.

Shapovalov Edges Past Arnaldi
Shapovalov needed four sets too before coming through against Matteo Arnaldi in his second round encounter. The Canadian, who had come into this tournament on the back of a 1-2 record on clay this season, registered a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Arnaldi to seal his third round spot here for the first time in his career.
Having earlier needed five sets to squeeze past Brandon Nakashima, the 11/10 underdog Shapovalov was on court for nearly three hours for this second round contest.
He faced one break-point in the contest and was broken once – it came in the second set and against the run of play – but more vitally he managed to get past his opponent’s serve on five occasions from the 16 chances he got.
It was his 38 winners that overshadowed his Arnaldi’s 24 in the encounter, with Shapovalov also winning 80% of his first serve points.
While Shapovalov will be chuffed with his twin wins in the tournament so far, he will need to do a lot better if he is looking to test out his next opponent, the world number one.
