Norrie Makes Quick Work of Pouille

Cameron Norrie is back into the third round of the French Open for the third successive year, but the Briton is yet to reach the round of 16 in Roland Garros. Could that happen this year?

While Norrie was brilliant on South American clay this year, he hasn’t been able to replicate that form on European clay. But still a record of 8-5 on European clay is a decent one and he would like to build on the solid start that he has had in Paris.

The world no. 13 Norrie didn’t have an ideal start to the tournament as he was stretched to five set by France’s Benoît Paire in the opening round. But, he looked in complete control in his second round win over another Frenchman – Lucas Pouille.

The three-and-a-half-hour first round match was followed by a one-hour-and-45-minute win over world no. 675 Pouille.

Norrie saved 6 of 12 break points in the match and converted 7 of 12 to ease into the third round with a 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Overall, Norrie is 29-10 this year and 16-6 on clay. He has already won a title in Rio by beating Carlos Alcaraz in the final and has had two runner-up finishes, one against Alcaraz in Buenos Aires and the other in Auckland.

Having produced such good results this year, there will be expectations from him to go deeper at the French Open.

Musetti Storms Into the Third Round

Facing Norrie will be 17th seed Lorenzo Musetti, who flew past a second opponent at the clay court major on Wednesday.

Musetti, who began his campaign with a 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 win over Mikael Ymer in the opening round, needed just and hour and 39 minutes to beat Russia’s Alexander Shevchenko 6-1, 6-1, 6-2.

Musetti was expected to win the contest but little could have anyone predicted that it would turn out to be such a one-sided affair. The world no. 18 saved all three of the break points that he faced in the match and converted 7 of 12. He pounded 30 winners in the match and made just 18 unforced errors on his way to a second third round in Roland Garros.

This is the 21-year-old’s third appearance in the Paris major. While he had reached the round of 16 on debut in 2021, he bowed out of the first round last year.

Having found his footing this year, it will be interesting to see how far he goes. Musetti is 11-8 on clay this season. He was a semifinalist in Barcelona and a quarterfinalist in Monte-Carlo and Marrakech and also made it to the round of 16 in Rome.

Norrie v Musetti Prediction and Tip

This is going to be a cracking third round contest. Musetti has beaten Norrie this year in Barcelona, and has also defeated Novak Djokovic on clay this year. He has a pretty good record on the surface this year and is off to a flying start in Roland Garros. Norrie will challenge but eventually the Briton may come up short.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Musetti  to win: 3/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 37.5 games in the match: 5/6
