After seeing off Laslo Djere in four set in the opening round, seventh seed Andrey Rublev moved into the third round with another four set win in the second round against Corentin Moutet.

The 25-year-old Russian, who is making his fifth appearance in Roland Garros has made two first round exits and two quarterfinal exits in the previous four editions. He has featured in seven grand slam quarterfinals in all, but despite his talent and caliber, he has not been able to go past the last eight stage yet.

However things may change for the 13-time tour level champion this year. He is in terrific form, particularly on clay. Rublev won his first ever Masters 1000 title by beating Holger Runa in the Monte-Carlo Masters final. He also reached the title clash in Banja Luka, but went down to Dusan Lajovic. In his other two clay court appearances ahead of the Paris major, Rublev finished in the round of 16 in both Madrid on Rome.

He is 14-3 on clay overall this season and could be adding to that in round three.

Rublev’s win over Moutet came in three hours. He struck 46 winners and made 43 unforced errors. Can he keep the momentum going in the third round?

Sonego Sends Humbert Packing

World no. 48 Lorenzo Sonego needed two hours and 40 minutes to dump out local hope and world no. 40 Ugo Humbert in the second round .

A-three-time champion from five finals at the tour-level, Sonego is into the third round for the third time in Paris. The 28-year-old had made it to the round of 16 in 2020 and to the third round last year.

The Italian had begun his French Open campaign with a four-set win over Ben Shelton. He performed even better in the second round, needing three sets to send the world no. 40 packing.

Sonego wasn’t broken in the first two sets of the match against Humbert, as the Italian built a two-sets-to-love win with a solitary break in the first set and three breaks in the second. The third set saw both the players trade an early break, but Sonego went on to take the the set in the tiebreak to complete a 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) victory.

Sonego has a 14-3 overall record this year and he is 6-4 on clay this season. Can he build on the good start with an upset win over Rubev,

Rublev v Sonego Prediction and Tip

Rublev is the superior player in this contest. He is also in terrific form and therefore is expected to make it to the final 16.
