Tauson Edges Past Fernandez in Three

Clara Tauson edged out Leylah Fernandez in a three-set second round contest on Wednesday to enter the third round of the French Open for the first time in her career.

The 20-year-old Dane, who had come through the qualifiers, had begun the tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 shellacking of Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first round.

She continued her good form in the second round ousting Fernandez in a two hour and 22 minute contest. Tauson saved 3 of 7 break points and converted 5 of 11 to oust the world no. 49, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

Ranked no. 127th in the world, Tauson had made two previous appearances at the clay court major, falling in the second round in 2020 and 2021.

She came into this year’s tournament having played very little at the tour level. But she played in a lot of lower level tournaments, winning an ITF title and finishing runner-up in another but both of them were hard court tournaments.

Tauson had qualified for this year’s main draw with wins over Katie Swan, Petra Marčinko and Mirjam Bjorklund.

Avanesyan’s Dream Debut Continues

Elina Avanesyan’s dream debut continued at Roland Garros as the 20-year-old Russian knocked out France’s Leolia Jeanjean in straight sets on Wednesday.

Ranked no. 134th in the world, Avanesyan had only found a place in the main draw as a lucky loser and she has made most of the opportunity so far.

The Russian, playing just her second Grand Slam, after falling in the first round of her U.S. Open debut last year, stunned 12th seed Belinda Bencic in the opening round.

She followed that win over the Swiss player with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Jeanjean in round 2. Avanesyan tormented the world no. 124 in the first round, wining 25 of the 33 points played in the set.

Jeanjean began the second set well, building a 1-3 lead. But Avanesyan soon drew level and then got the decisive break in the final game to close out the match in an hour and 12 minutes.

Avanesyan, who recently won an ITF title on clay in Germany, and was a semifinalist in the WTA 125 in San Luis Potosi, improved to 20-12 on clay across levels. She had beaten Darya Astakhova and Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove in the first two qualifying rounds. But she lost the final qualifier to Kayla Day in three sets.

Can she extend her dream debut with another win on Friday?

Tauson v Avanesyan Prediction and Tip

Tauson’s the more experienced player. She showed what she is capable of doing in 2021, winning two WTA titles from three finals in what was seen as a breakthrough season, but she was pegged back by a back injury. However, she seems to be in good rhythm at Roland Garros and having started with solid wins against world no. 51 and 49, she will definitely hold the edge in the third round clash.

Expect Tauson to win and reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Tauson to win: 2/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
