Maia Moves Past Shnaider
Beatriz Haddad Maia, the number one Brazilian player on the WTA Tour, found herself in a tricky match when she took on the Russian teenager Diana Shnaider. Need a little under three hours, Maia took the match 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
She did make an impressive start to her Roland Garros campaign, dominating Tatjana Maria with a 6-0, 6-1 victory in a swift 66 minutes. The two wins also mean this is her best result in the singles Grand Slam.
Currently ranked 14th in the world, Beatriz has been gaining momentum gradually, highlighted by her recent quarterfinal appearance in Rome.
Alongside consistent performances in Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Adelaide, the 26-year-old athlete holds a 19-11 record in 2023. Maia also has some doubles momentum, courtesy of the Madrid Open crown with Victoria Azarenka and the final run at the Indian Wells with Laura Siegemund.

Alexandrova Beats Friedsam
Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova has also endured a rocky campaign in Paris this week. After fighting a three-setter in the opening match with Viktoriya Tomova (current #72), she made quick work of Anna-Lena Friedsam. Needing just 63 minutes, Alexandrova won the match 6-2, 6-0.
The current World No. 23 has had a mediocre year so far. Last year, she clocked 35-18, while so far, she is 13-10. On clay, her best results include a quarterfinal feat in Charleston and a fourth-round showdown in Madrid. Ekaterina’s last tournament was in Rome, where she lost the opener to Camila Giorgi.
On hard courts, she did reach the quarters in Miami, but apart from that, the 28-year-old could not quite move past the early opponents.
Alexandrova has never made it beyond round three in Paris. Overall, clay hasn’t been her best performing turf either (sans last season) – which makes it all the more difficult for the Russian to win this one.
Maia v Alexandrova Prediction and Tip
Maia has the advantage owing to her momentum and slightly better form. That said, Alexandrova is not too bad of a player who can’t turn things around quickly. At the very very least, a three-setter seems quite likely here.
Tips:
- Low-Risk Tip: Maia to win: 4/5
- Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 2/1
