Rune Safely Through With Monfils Walkover

Gael Monfils’ energy-sapping and an emotionally intoxicating first-round win over Sebastian Baez came at a personal cost to his health.

The veteran Frenchman won a five-setter in the primetime night match, and truthfully, he played on adrenaline rush deep in the fifth set where he completed a remarkable turnaround from 0-4, 30-40 down.

Later that evening, Monfils told the press that sadly, he had to withdraw from his second-round match against Holger Rune due to a wrist injury on the advice of doctors.

Monfils added that he cannot solve the injury which he felt during the match and stopped short of calling it his last Roland Garros.

That means Holger Rune advances to the third round without striking a ball. The young Dane came through his opening match in a testing encounter against big-serving American Christopher Eubanks who had him worried for two and a half sets before prevailing in four.

Rune is one of the top three favorites to win the French Open this fortnight in the absence of Rafael Nadal and his burgeoning rise on the men’s tour in the last 12 months.

Olivieri’s Fairytale Has Another Chapter

It’s not often you see two qualifiers go toe-to-toe in the second round of a Grand Slam tournament.

But it happened on Thursday when Argentina’s Genaro Alberto Olivieri took on Italy’s Andrea Vavassori, thanks in part to Vavassori’s monumental win over 31st seed Miomir Kecmanovic two days prior which made this contest a reality.

And in this match, each player must have felt they had a fair shot of winning the match, but it was Vavassori’s superior ranking and his experience of facing top-100 opponents more frequently which made him the favorite.

Olivieri though knew matches were not won on paper, and at entering the match at 9/4 with the bookies, produced yet another fairytale chapter to keep his Grand Slam debut afloat for at least one more round.

Vavassori had won three tiebreaks against Kecmanovic, but this time, tiebreaks proved his undoing. Olivieri saved a set point in the first en route to winning the breaker 9-7.

And despite the Italian using his heavy hitting to level the match, Olivieri saved four of five break points in the third to win it 6-3. And he completed his four-set win by winning the fourth-set tiebreak in dominant fashion 7-6 (7-3).
