Coric Pushed to Five by Cachin
It will be a third Argentine in a row standing in Borna Coric’s path at the 2023 French Open.
Having seen off Federico Coria in his opener, Coric met Pedro Cachin on Thursday and he was precariously close to exiting the tournament, responding back from two sets to one down to win 6-3 4-6 4-6 6-3 6-4 in four hours and 23 minutes.
Things couldn’t have kicked off any better for Coric who broke Cachin twice in a composed performance in the first set. But the second and third sets were mirror-like with Coric losing his focus at critical moments on his serve.
Despite finding himself in the driver’s seat. Cachin never looked in control. Coric soon regained his level from the first set, breaking midway through the fourth set in which he fired 15 winners to seven unforced errors.
And in the decider, the two players exchanged service breaks in the first six games. But Coric broke for a 4-3 lead and consolidated by saving a break point in the next game before going on to wrap up the win.
Coric has never advanced beyond the third round in four previous tries in Paris, so will the fifth time be the charm for the 15th seed?

Etcheverry Accounts for De Minaur Upset
Tomas Martin Etcheverry earned a retirement win in his opening match, leading Jack Draper 6-4 1-0 when the Briton retired with injury.
But he did not miss his touch one bit as he downed 18th seed Alex de Minaur 6-3 7-6 6-3 and made it to the third round of the clay slam for the first time.
Etechverry at 1/1, was a slight underdog against the experienced and fast-footed Aussie. But ranking and experience counted for nothing on an afternoon when Etcheverry stretched every muscle in getting his first complete win in the main draw of Roland Garros.
Perhaps the telling moment of the match came in the second set when Etcheverry was serving to take a two-sets-to-love lead at 6-5. Three set points came and vanished, and De Minaur broke to force a tiebreak.
It would have been very easy for Etcheverry to buckle and leave him dwelling on missed opportunities but he quickly got his focus and mind working for him in the tiebreak where he squeezed three mini-breaks out of De Minaur to extend his lead.
The Aussie did not recover from that moment on, reversing a 2-0 sets lead being almost beyond his reach. Etcheverry garnered one break midway through the third set and it proved sufficient in getting a routine win.
