They met once at Indian Wells in 2021 and Dimitrov won that match in straight sets.

Grigor Dimitrov moved into the third round of the French Open for the seventh time in his career. The Bulgarian, who is playing in the tournament for the 13th time, has gone past the third round just once before and that was in 2020, when he lost in the fourth round.

Dimitrov came into this year’s clay court major in fine form and has looked dangerous in the first two rounds.

The 28th seed had eased past Kazakhstan’s Timofey Skatov 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 in the first round. He had a tougher match in the second round against the Emil Ruusuvuori on Thursday, but the world no. 29 still triumphed in straight sets.

After both players traded two breaks each, Dimitrov edged out the Finn in the tiebreak to take a one-set-to-love lead.

In the second set, Dimitrov as broken in the very first game but he bounced back with a double break and then held on to the advantage to take a two-sets-to-love lead. The third set was a competitive one as well with Dimitrov breaking early. Ruusuvuori pulled it back, but the Bulgarian restored the advantage immediately with a second break and he held on to the lead to complete a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, 6-3 victory.

Dimitrov, who ended a five-year finals drought by finishing runner-up in Geneva last week, improved his 2023 clay court record to 9-4 following Thursday’s win. He will be eager to keep the momentum going and reach the last 16 for the second time in Roland Garros.

Altmaier Battles Past Sinner

World no. 79 Daniel Altmaier showed nerves of steel as he battled past eighth seed Jannik Sinner in a five-hour-and-26-minute second round contest on Thursday.

The 24-year-old German saved two match points on Sinner’s serve at 4-5 in the fourth set. He then went on to win the set and force the decider. Serving for the match at 6-5 in the fifth set, Altmaier squandered four match point chances but he held his nerves to convert the fifth and win the epic battle 6-7 (0-7), 7-6 (9-7), 1-6, 7-6 (9-4), 7-5.

This is the second time in his third appearance that Altmaier has made it this far at the French Open. He had reached the round of 16 on his debut in 2020. That year as well he had beaten a top 10 player en route the last 16 and that win came over Matteo Berrettini in the third round.

The win over the world no. 9 Sinner on Thursday was his second top 10 win in his career.

Altmaier had begun his French Open campaign with a straight sets win over Marc-Andrea Huesler.

He has been in terrific form on clay this season and Tursday’s win improved his overall clay court record to 21-14 this season, that includes a seventh Challenger title in Sarasota.

Altmaier was also a quarterfinaliut in Madrid and had made it to the second round in Rome after qualifying for the tourament.

Dimitrov v Altmaier Prediction and Tip

Dimitrov is in fine form and is yet to drop a set in the tournament. Altmaier is in excellent form as well, but it will be interesting to see how quickly he recovers from the punishing five-hour-plus contest on Thursday. Dimitrov’s vast experience will also be a plus for the Bulgarian. This is going to be a tight contest but the Bulgarian is expected to edge through.
