Gauff Ousts Grabher

Last year’s finalist Coco Gauff moved into the third round of the French Open with a straight sets win over Austria’s Julia Grabher.

The world no. 6, who had begun her campaign with a come-from-behind three-set win over Spain’s Rebeka Masarova, was far more convincing in the second round win on Thursday, ousting the world no. 61, 6-2, 6-3 in an hour and seven minutes.

In the first set, Gauff had built a 5-1 lead before Grabher pulled a break back. However, a third break sealed the set for the American.

In the second, Gauff came back from a break down twice as the set began with four consecutive breaks. The sixth seed then got the decisive third break in the sixth game, which helped her move into the third round for the third time in her fourth attempt. She was a quarterfinalist in 2021, but finished runner-up to Iga Swaitek last year.

This is the first time this season that the 19-year-old has won consecutive matches on clay. She improved her season record to 5-3 on the surface and will be hoping to keep improving that record in Paris

In the one hour and 14 minute contest, Andreeva converted 5 of 14 break points and was broken just once in the match.

Andreeva has played only on clay this season and has a stunning 22-2 record. She won two ITF titles in April and then put up a an outstanding performance in Madrid, reaching the fourth round of the tournament, by beating some big names on the way.

The 16-year-old qualified for the French Open with straight set wins over Polina Kudermetova, Emiliana Arango and Camila Osorio. She will make things difficult for last year’s runner-up in the third round.
