Hurkacz in a Marathon Tussle with Griekspoor

Having needed five sets in his opener against David Goffin, Hurkacz was stretched to another five-setter in the second round. And this one was an even tougher match with the Polish number one needing four hours and 44 minutes to get past Tallon Griekspoor.

Hurkacz shrugged off a two sets to one deficit which included five missed set-points in the third set, and went on to win 6-3, 5-7, 6-7 (13), 7-6 (5), 6-4.

After having played in two gruelling tie-breakers in the third and fourth sets, it looked like there was another tie-breaker in the offing in the fifth when the two went into the ninth game tied at 4-4. The world number 14 broke his opponent in the very next game and then served it out to 15 to squeeze past Griekspoor.

Rather interestingly, this was Hurkacz’s fifth five-setter of the season, having also played in three at the Australian Open.

Varillas in His Own Five-Setters

In almost similar fashion as Hurkacz, Varillas has needed two five-setters in the tournament already to make it to the third round.

What makes it even more fascinating is in both those two matches, the Peruvian player has made a comeback from being two sets down to win it in five. In the first round he beat Juncheng Shang before edging past Roberto Bautistan Agut, who was a 2/5 favourite in that encounter.

He won 1-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 in a match that went on for three hours and 48 minutes.

Four breaks of serves against Varillas cost him the first two sets but from that point on, he lost his serve just once while saving 10 break-points in the process.

Can he now dish out a similar fighting showing against Hurkacz as well?

Hurkacz v Varillas Prediction and Tip

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Hurkacz to win: 2/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Hurkacz to win AND Both players to win a set: 5/4
