Zverev Sends Molcan Packing

It had taken Zverev some time to get going against Lloyd Harris in his first round match but once he did, he hasn’t looked back. After those first two sets in his opener went into tie-breakers, Zverev has won the next four for the loss of just eight games.

The last three of those sets came against Alex Molcan in the second round with Zverev defeating his opponent 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 in less than two hours.

Zverev faced eight break-points in the encounter but not once did he allow Molcan to get the better of his serve even as he broke him six times in the match. Zverev has had issues with serves in his past but against Molcan he won 77% of his first serves and 66% of the second.

A whopping 42 winners for Zverev as opposed to 12 for his opponent made all the difference.

The opponent quality will change drastically as we get to the third round here but Zverev looks to have gotten into some sort of a rhythm to tackle his 12th-ranked opponent.

Tiafoe Turns Things Around Against Karatsev

Since winning the Houston Open in early April, Tiafoe’s performances on clay would have left a lot to desire.

He had lost his opener at the Barcelona Open, and only won one match apiece at the Madrid Masters and Rome Masters in the lead-up to the French Open.

Which is why successive wins here against Filip Krajinovic and Aslan Karatsev would have been of a huge relief. Especially in the second round even as Karatsev started off at 19/20 to win this encounter.

Tiafoe was on court for two hours and 45 minutes as he overturned a first set deficit to win 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 and proceed into the third round. He did lose his serve thrice but came back to do the same to his Russian opponent six times in a row.

Can Tiafoe overturn his poor record against Zverev on clay?
