Nishioka Ends Wild’s Run in Five
He made his fourth round debut at a Grand Slam at this year’s Australian Open and now Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka has proved that it was no fluke as the Japanese entered the fourth round of the French Open on Saturday.
Nishioka’s previous best at Roland Garros included three second round finishes. He has been excellent in this year’s edition though, particularly showing grit in close contests.
In the opening round, Nishioka had come back from two sets down to defeat America’s J.J. Wolf 1-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. He then overturned one-set deficit to beat Australia’s Max Purcell 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 in round 2.
In the third round on Saturday, Nishioka once again needed to claw his way back in the contest and he did a great job to oust Brazil’s Thiago Seyboth Wild 3-6, 7-6 (10-8), 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.
The world no. 33 saved three set points in the second set tiebreak, coming back from 3-6 down to win the tiebreak 10-8 and tie that match at one-set apiece. Had he lost the second, it would have been curtains for him soon as the world no. 172 outplayed him in the third set. But Nishioka’s win in the second proved vital and then he raised his level in the final two sets to advance.
A two-time champion on the tour, Nishioka improved to 5-4 on clay this year and 13-10 overall. Can the Japanese reach a first major quarterfinal?

Etcheverry Sends Coric Packing
A run to the finals in Santiago and Houston and a runner-up finish at the Bordeaux Challenger just before the start of the French Open were an indication that Tomas Martin Etcheverry was set to have a good run at the clay court major and so far the argentine has lived up to expectations.
Etcheverry, who won his first match in a major at the Australian Open this year, reached the fourth round of the French Open with a straight sets win over 15th seed Borna Coric on Saturday.
Etcheverry converted 5 of 17 break points and saved 5 of 7 to beat the Croatian 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
The world no. 49 is yet to lose a set in the tournament. His first round match ended with his opponent Jack Draper retiring with the Etcheverry leading 6-4, 1-0.
In the second round, Etcheverry dumped out the 18th seed Alex de Mianur in three sets.
Etcheverry is 21-10 on clay across levels and 25-14 overall. Can the Argentine keep marching forward in the tournament?
Nishioka v Etcheverry Prediction and Tip
