Djokovic leads the Russian 8-1. Khachanov’s only win came in the final of the Paris Masters in 2018. Else Djokovic has dominated the rivalry.

He also beat the Russian at the French Open in 2020 and beat Khachanov four times last year. This will be the first meeting in 2023.

Another interesting stat: Khachanov has won just three sets against Djokovic in their nine meetings (Two of those came during his win over the serb in Paris).

Djokovic Eases Past Varillas

World no. 3 Novak Djokovic eased past Peru’s Juan Pablo Varillas in straight sets on Sunday to move into the quarterfinals at Roland Garros for the 17th time in his career.

The Serb won 84% points on his first serve, struck 35 winners and converted half of the 12 break points to beat the world no. 92, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 during a clinical victory crafted in a close to two-hour contest.

Djokovic has reached the quarterfinal without dropping a set in the first four rounds.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion had begun the tournament with a 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) victory over Aleksandar Kovacevic and he followed that win with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-0, 6-3 victory over Márton Fucsovics.

The 36-year-old then battled past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 in a three-hour-and-34-minute third round contest.

The reigning Australian Open champion is 24-4 this season and 9-3 on clay. He is aiming to win a third French Open title and a record breaking 23rd Grand Slam this fortnight.

A win on Tuesday will take Djokovic into his 12th semifinal at the French Open. How far can he go at the Paris major?

Khachanov Holds Off Sonego

World no. 11 Karen Khachanov entered the quarterfinals of the French Open for the second time in his seventh attempt as he knocked out Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in four sets.

The 11th seed was outplayed by the world no. 48 in the first set, but he tied the match at the end of the second, thanks to a solitary break in the set. Khachanov then saved a set pint in the third set tiebreak, before taking a two-sets-to-one lead. He then raced past the Italian in the fourth set to complete a 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 victory.

Khachanov had begun the tournament by rallying from two sets down to beat France’s Constant Lestienne in the first round. He then knocked out Radu Albot in straight sets in round 2, before dumping out Thanasi Kokkinakis in four sets in the third round.

Khachanov, who reached back-to-back semifinals at the US. Open and the Australian Open, is looking to reach the final four of a Grand Slam for the third consecutive time.

He is 23-10 this season and 10-4 on clay. Can he pull off an upset on Tuesday?
