Our 2023 WTA Nottingham Open Predictions & Picks
Since the tournament became a fully-fledged tour-level event in 2015 only one Brit has won it – Johanna Konta back in 2021. But following Konta’s retirement could we see a home player lay hands on the Rothesay Open trophy?
Katie Swan and Katie Boulter are guaranteed to be in the main draw, but both could be looking at a hectic schedule of playing back-to-back tournaments with little rest time. The pair are set to play in the semifinals at the W100 ITF in Surbiton at the weekend.
Maria Sakkari is a three-time quarterfinalist at this event. Could she overcome that hurdle this year?
Sakkari isn’t fond of serving up her best tennis on grass, but she does have a third-round showing at Wimbledon on record and also reached the semifinal in Berlin last season. And with a chance to bounce back from her tough luck in Paris (lost to finalist Karolina Muchova in the first round), Sakkari might be worth a punt.
It will be interesting to see whether Beatriz Haddad Maia will defend her title. After recording her best Grand Slam result at the French Open (reached the semis), the Brazilian might need a rest, but the word is that she has accepted a wild card.
Pint-sized Italian Camila Giorgi has a title on grass on her resume, but doubts linger on her fitness after she retired against Jessica Pegula in the second round. Giorgi, if healthy, is extremely volatile, but very dangerous on this surface.
It looks like Donna Vekic is reliving her 2019 season. Playing injury free and with confidence, the Croatian will be a perennial threat on grass due to her aggressive ball striking and immaculate serving. Being seeded also means that she’ll likely have tougher matches from the quarterfinals onwards. We like Vekic’s chances of adding to her title kitty.
- Outright Winner Tip: Donna Vekic
- Outright Winner Dark Horse Tip: Camila Giorgi
