Novak Djokovic v Casper Ruud Head to Head

There have been four previous meetings between these two players and Djokovic has won all four of them including twice on clay. In fact, Ruud is yet to win a set against Djokovic in those four matches.

Djokovic Comes to the Party against Alcaraz

Djokovic lies on the cusp of history. The 22-time Grand Slam winner needs one more title to get to the maximum tournament major wins on the men’s circuit and he is now one win away from doing that.

And to get to the final, Djokovic played one of the matches of his life to cruise past an ailing Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinal.

Two hours and 10 minutes into the match, it looked like either player could make it through but Alcaraz did have a slight edge having won the second set and pocketed the momentum.

Post that, Alcaraz suffered major cramps and that spelled the beginning of his end in the contest. Djokovic won the next two sets 6-1, 6-1 with Alcaraz admitting it was the tension of playing a player like Djokovic that caused him to cramp up.

And that’s what the legend of Djokovic has been – a guy who never gives up and has the technical and physical game to test any opponent. He had come into this tournament on the back of no clay court titles, suffered an injury in the lead-up and hasn’t quite been at his most physically fit self.

Here he is now, in the final and taking on a player who will be featuring in his second successive French Open final.

Ruud Expels Zverev with Ease

It was expected to be a tight match with neither player, Ruud or Alexander Zverev, starting out as a runaway favourite in their semifinal. Zverev had shown what he is capable of on clay and for the first time this season, he had won five matches in a row in a tournament.

Ruud, on the other hand, has had a clay court title but overall, his form had been anything but sterling.

How things went in their semifinal totally contrasted that showing from Ruud.

He was on court for a mere two hours and 11 minutes to clinch a 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 victory over Zverev, making it to his second successive French Open semifinal. The only time Ruud lost his serve in the match was in the third game of the opening set, but that was preceded and followed by a break on either side of that for the Norwegian number one.

Ruud clinched the opening set off his second set-point and then broke Zverev in the seventh game of the second set to go two up.

By this time Zverev looked to have given up with nothing going his way and was broken three more times by Ruud to sign things off.

It would be a different equation against Djokovic though.

Djokovic v Ruud Prediction and Tip

Djokovic is an overwhelming favourite here and it remains to be seen if Ruud can do any better than what he had last season’s final where he was beaten in straight sets by Rafael Nadal.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Djokovic to win: 2/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Games Handicap Djokovic -5.5: 4/5
