Mackenzie McDonald v Ilya Ivashka Head to Head

McDonald on an Eight-Match Losing Streak

Gone are the days when McDonald was riding on the high of having stunned Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open. That had been the biggest win of his career and while it came against an ailing Nadal, it should have given him a lot of confidence.

Since then, however, McDonald’s form has slowly fallen away. To the extent, he is now on an eight-match losing streak which includes six successive defeats on clay, and one on the Challenger circuit in a grass court competition in Surbiton.

Clay has never been McDonald’s go-to surface anyway but losing to Jordan Thompson in his opener at the Surbiton Challenger in straight sets would have been a bit of a concern.

On grass, McDonald’s overall career record reads a solid 8-8 – especially when compared with the 8-17 on clay and 65-71 on hardcourts – but that’s also a very shmall sample size of things. Can he now stall his losing run and win his first match since the last week of March.

Ivashka Coming off Surbiton Second Round Exit

While Ivashka’s record on clay this season wasn’t as bad as his opponent’s, he still struggled to register wins.

There was a second round appearance at the Monte-Carlo Masters and that was followed by a quarterfinal showing in Geneva. Other than that he fell in the first round of five events on clay including an opening Challenger defeat.

After an opening defeat at the French Open, Ivashka proceeded to feature in that same Challenger tournament in Surbiton as McDonald had, won his opener against Hugo Grenier before falling in the second round.

Ivashka lost to the 23/10 underdog Rinky Hijikata which can hardly be called ideal match practice for the start of the grass court swing but he will know McDonald’s in an even worse form than his own.

Can he take advantage of that?

McDonald v Ivashka Prediction and Tip

Ivashka is a 7/10 favourite but we reckon this is too close an encounter to call. We will have to go with a three-setter in this one

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 1/4
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
