Matteo Berrettini v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

Their only previous match at the highest level came in this very tournament last year and Berrettini had won that quarterfinal in three sets. Before that, they had also faced off in two Challenger-level matches which were also won by Berrettini.

Berrettini 20-1 on Grass

Over the last couple of years, Berrettini has shown shades of the possibility of challenging some of the best in the world and at his own best, he was ranked sixth in the world too.

He has fallen to 20th at the moment but his career-best performances came on grass, a surface on which he has won 20 of his last 21 matches.

That’s the kind of record that should help you break into the top five if not better, especially when you have won three titles and reached the final of the fourth – at the 2021 Wimbledon.

Unfortunately for Berrettini he has struggled all of this season, partly due to poor form and some of it thanks to his fitness. Which is why he enters the grass court swing on the back of just nine wins from 16 matches which includes a first round defeat at the Australian Open and a non-show at the French Open.

Can he now get back to his winning ways on his favourite surface?

Sonego Returns off Quarterfinal Last Season

Sonego was a quarterfinalist at this tournament last season and now enters this year’s Stuttgart Open on the back of some good form on clay.

The Italian had made the third round at the Rome Masters earlier this season and followed that up with some gritty wins over Ben Shelton and Ugo Humbert at the French Open.

He then ground out a five-set victory over Andrey Rublev in the third round of that tournament, coming back from two sets down to get past his Russian opponent. While Karen Khachanov ended his stay in the tournament there, it means that Sonego has risen to 41st on the ATP Rankings.

Sonego did make it to the third round at Wimbledon last year too, which gives him some hope coming into this tournament in Stuttgart.

Berrettini v Sonego Prediction and Tip

Berrettini will be a favourite but with him only just returning from his fitness issues and a two-month long layoff, it might not be the easiest of wins.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Berrettini to win: 4/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 25.5 games in the match: 5/6
