Caty McNally v Katie Volynets Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, and McNally has won each time.

The first two of those victories came on hard courts, in Guadalajara in 2019, and in Merida this February. Their most recent meeting was on the clay of Paris three weeks ago, McNally winning in three sets.

McNally Back After Injury

McNally has already tasted champagne this season after winning the doubles in  Merida, Mexico, where her partner was fellow American Diane Parry.

By a twist of fate they also met in the final of a Challenger event on clay in Paris last month, – however, McNally was forced to withdraw with an injury that would subsequently keep her out of the French Open.

It was back in Merida again where she reached her first WTA semi-final – with Volynets again one of her victims along the way – breaking into the top 75 in the world for the first time.

Still principally regarded as a doubles player, she has appeared in two Grand Slam finals, having been on the losing side in the women’s doubles at the US Open for the past two years.

This will be her first match back since her injury lay-off.

Volynets Glad to Leave Clay

Although Volynets is an ideal name for a tennis player, especially on grass, it is actually Ukrainian in origin.

The American had a good start to the season, reaching the third round of the Australian Open, the furthest she has been in any Grand Slam to date.

And then in Austin she got to her first WTA quarter-final.

The switch to clay, a surface on which she does not excel, did her no favours, and results have been much harder to come by recently.

She did reach the semi-final of a Challenger event in Saint Malo, and again in Paris, where she was beaten by McNally. But when it came to the main tour, it was much tougher, as first round defeats in Stuttgart, Rome and at Roland Garros testify.

McNally v Volynets Prediction and Tip

Since McNally has beaten Volynets every time they have played previously, including twice earlier this year, she must start as the clear favourite.

Volynets will hope that grass proves to be a “leveller”.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: McNally to win: 4/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/4
