The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 27 year old Belgian, and the German, who is six years younger.

Mertens Twice a Rosmalen Doubles’ Finalist

Mertens is an accomplished grass court player. With two different partners she has reached the final of the women’s doubles at Wimbledon in the past two years, winning it with Hseih Su-wei in 2021, and having to settle for the losers’ cheque with Zhang Shuai last year.

She was also a beaten finalist in the doubles in this event last year, having won it four years earlier.

Given also that the tournament takes place only a relatively short distance away from her native Belgium, it is almost a home event for her.

Already a WTA tour winner this year in doubles in Rome, her last singles success was back last October in Tunisia.

She had a mixed singles clay court season, beaten in the first round in Bogota and Rome, but reaching the third round in Madrid, and the last 16 at Roland Garros, where she easily beat Jessica Pegula, before losing a three set battle with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Lys Has no Known Grass Court Form

Lys began her year by qualifying for her first Grand Slam in Melbourne, although she was subsequently beaten in the first round. The German is better known for her exploits on the ITF circuit, where she has appeared in four finals, winning three of them, most recently in Slovakia, last October.

Apart from Melbourne, the only other time she has appeared on the main tour this year was in Linz, where she got to the second round.

Since then it has been a story of early exits from Challenger events or failure to qualify for main tour tournaments.

The latest in that disappointing sequence occurred in Roland Garros, where she lost in the first round of qualifying. She has no known grass court form.

Mertens v Lys Prediction and Tip

It is difficult to make much of a case for the German against an accomplished grass court player like Mertens. The Belgian can expect to take her place in the next round with a minimum of fuss.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Mertens to win: 2/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 18.5 games in the match: 1/1
