While Kalinina lost in the first round at three of the four clay court competitions she participated in, she more than made it up for it by reaching the final of the Italian Open.
With wins over Sofia Kenin, Madison Keys, Beatriz Haddad Maia and Veronika Kudermetova, Kalinina made the title-decider where she was forced to retire from the encounter on account of an injury.
And while she recovered from that issue enough to feature at the French Open, Kalinina was sent packing in the very first round by Diane Parry despite starting out a 2/5 favourite.
She will now hope she can shrug off that fitness concern as she moves to a surface on which she has won five career matches, all of which came in 2022. Can she adapt to grass quickly enough as she looks to maintain her ranking.

Things haven’t quite gone Parrizas-Diaz’s way in recent times as she has slumped to four defeats from her previous five matches. This includes opening round defeats at the Rabat Open and French Open.

In fact, even a third round appearance at the Australian Open – her best of the season by some distance – wasn’t enough to control the stall as a poor clay swing pushed her to her current 103rd.
Parrizas-Diaz has also not won a main draw match on grass in her entire career.
She featured in Birmingham, Eastbourne and Wimbledon last season, losing in the first round at each of them while having earlier failed to qualify for the latter in 2021.
