Birrell Lost First Grass Court Match of the Season
Birrell’s career has been punctuated by injury problems and spells out of the game.
She is currently in the middle of her second comeback to the sport, and has been rewarded for her dedication by recently reaching her all-time career ranking.
That has been helped by reaching four ITF finals in the past 12 months, winning two of them, most recently in Orlando in February.
Like her opponent, Birrell’s successes on the main tour have been confined to doubles – she has appeared in two finals, seven years apart, the most recent of which was in Monterrey in March.
Where Birrell differs from her opponent is recent experience of the main tour.
She got to the second round of the Australian Open in January, and the third round in Merida after qualifying.
The Australian also played in Rome and at Roland Garros, although she lost in the first round each time.
Birrell’s first grass court match of the year in Surbiton last week also ended in defeat.

Pattiname-Kerkhove Owes Presence to Local Status
Pattiname-Kerkhove’s biggest successes on the main tour have all come in doubles – she has appeared in six finals, although her only victory came back in 2017 in Luxembourg.
However, she has won 9 ITF titles in a career stretching back to 2010 on the ITF circuit, the most recent of which was achieved in Roehampton last July.
All of those finals were on either hard courts or clay – Pattiname-Kerkhove has no known grass court form.
This will be the first time that she has appeared in the main draw of a senior WTA event this year, and her presence in Rosmalen owes much to her “home status.”
She was last in action on clay trying to qualify for the French Open, but she fell at the second hurdle of that competition.
Birrell v Pattiname-Kerkhove Prediction and Tip
Whilst neither woman is known for their grass court form, Birrell has far more experience of the senior tour.
Pattiname-Kerkhove does have the advantage of playing at home, but most of the other odds appear to favour the Australian.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Birrell to win: 8/13
- Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 10/11
