O’Connell Falls in Surbiton Opener

Featuring in the Surbiton Challenger as way to tune-up for the grass swing ahead, O’Connell did not make it further than the first round there.

The Aussie lost to American veteran Denis Kudla in his opener, despite having started out as an 8/11 favourite in the encounter. He went out 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.

Coming into the grass swing, the thing he would like to take some from confidence from is the manner in which he made the semifinal at the Munich Open and followed it up with a Geneva Open quarterfinal. Earlier he had made the last eight stage at the Marrakesh Open as well.

What O’Connell wouldn’t want to focus too much on will be his overall record on grass.

He has managed to feature in only two main draw grass court matches and lost both. Can he turn that around against a player who has had a few more wins than him?

Altmaier Rising after a Poor Start

Having hit a season low ranking of 114th in the world, Altmaier has turned things around in the second quarter of the year.

The German won 14 of the 20 matches he played on clay, including admittedly a few on the Challenger circuit but a quarterfinal appearance at the Madrid Masters after having started out as a lucky loser.

Altmaier would later go on to make it to the third round, shocking Jannik Sinner on his way in a five-setter that had three tie-breakers. As a result he kick-starts his grass court season high on confidence and a ranking 59th on the charts.

What will also bolster his morale is unlike his opponent he has tasted victories at the highest level on grass. At Mallorca last year, Altmaier had made the quarterfinal, and similarly was a quarterfinalist in Antalya in 2017 as well.

He might not start off a favourite but we sure think he has a good chance here.

O’Connell v Altmaier Prediction and Tip

O’Connell holds the bookmaker’s confidence but we will be taking the contrarian view and going with the in-form Altmaier as a favourite..

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Altmaier to win a set: 2/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Altmaier to win: 11/10
