Tiafoe Returns after Solid Clay Season

A title win at the Houston Open and having made the third round of the French Open, Tiafoe would be reasonably satisfied with his effort on clay.

He would have ideally liked to go deeper into at least one of the Masters tournaments he featured in – in Madrid or Rome – but having started off the season on a positive note in hardcourt competitions, Tiafoe looked to have done well to consolidate his position on the ATP Rankings.

What will be crucial now is how he goes about his business on grass, after finishing the previous season on this surface with a 3-3 win-loss record. That wasn’t too different from his 4-3 stat in 2021 but he did win the Nottingham Challenger that year other than those seven matches.

To go with that, Tiafoe had made it to the fourth round at Wimbledon last year, which might not be the easiest to emulate. Which is why a solid showing in these grass court ATP tournaments would go a long way in helping him retain his ranking come August.

Lehecka Overturns Odds, Opening Set Deficit

It did take Lehecka some time to get going but once he had, he was able to get himself a crucial opening round win on grass. It was his first ever victory on this surface for his career and that came on the back of 4/3 odds at the start of the match for him.

Lehecka was on court for an hour and 46 minutes before coming through 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a rather cagey encounter against Marcos Giron.

After failing to avail of two break-points in the first set, Lehecka was broken in the seventh game and failed to retaliate in time. In the second set, Lehecka went 3-0 up, missed a further four break-points before serving out to 15 to level things out.

The decider looked like it was going only one way when Lehecka broke Giron twice to take a 5-2 lead. He was broken when he served for the match at that scoreline but came back to serve it out to love the second time he got that opportunity.

Can he now take down Tiafoe in this second round?

Tiafoe v Lehecka Prediction and Tip

While Tiafoe is a straightforward 1/3 favourite we think this could turn out to be a lot tighter than what those odds represent.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Lehecka to win a set: 4/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 4/5
