Hurkacz Hoping to Continue with Good Grass Form

A former Wimbledon semifinalist and a Halle Open winner, Hurkacz kick-starts his grass court campaign for the season after getting an opening round bye in Stuttgart.

For a player who was ranked ninth not so long ago, it’s been a modest season so far. Hurkacz will be pleased with some of his performances so far – a title win at the Marseille Open and a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open to name a couple – but some of his other showings have been quite under-par.

Like when he was knocked out in his opener at Rome and Estoril, or when he did not make it past the third round at Madrid.

Which is why, a switch to grass could work wonders for Hurkacz.

Sure, he hasn’t been as consistent on this surface as one would have expected him to be but starting out against a player ranked 121st should give him that much-needed hit-out in a competitive match.

Qualifier Watanuki Makes it Past Lopez

Why is Feliciano Lopez still playing, is a question that many a tennis fan has had on their lips. Whatever may be the reason, it does allow his opponent to start off as a favourite despite having never been ranked inside the top 100.

Watanuki, who needed to get past Henri Squire and Benjamin Hassan in his qualifiers, overcame Lopez 7-6 (5), 6-3 to enter the second round.

He needed a shade over an hour and a half before carving out the win, while breaking his opponent just once in the entire match. 17 aces and a first serve statistic of 85% of the points won was what he needed to clinch the victory as he took advantage of Lopez’s issues on his first serves.

Things will be drastically different against Hurkacz though and Watanuki will hope to tighten his game even further if he wants to make things difficult for his 14th-ranked opponent.

Hurkacz v Watanuki Prediction and Tip

While Hurkacz hasn’t played a match on grass since his first round ouster at Wimbledon last season, he should not have a lot of trouble here as he faces a player ranked 121st in the world.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Under 23.5 games in the match: 8/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Hurkacz to win in straight sets: 10/11
