The last time that Raonic took to court for a competitive match before the start of this tournament was in July 2021. Even there he was returning from a four-match layoff because of injury.
He lost in the first round in Atlanta and hasn’t played since.
That was till he put his name in the hat for this tournament where he entered as a wildcard.
And Raonic has done an excellent job of it too, winning the opener here against Miomir Kecmanovic. It was like he was never gone as the former world number three registered a 6-3, 6-4 victory in an hour and 25 minutes.
Raonic’s serve bailed him out like it had always done as the Canadian won 92% of his first serve points and was broken just once in the match. He had 10 break-point opportunities and he took three of them to march on.

Thompson Stretched by Mpetshi Perricard
Just 19 years of age and ranked 233rd in the world, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard wasn’t expected to do too much when he took on Thompson in his opener. In fact Thompson had started off a 1/4 favourite to come through but in the end it was a hard-fought win for the Aussie.
While the match was over in two sets, it wasn’t before Mpetshi Perricard had taken Thompson to a tie-breaker in the second and losing his serve just once in the entire match.
Thomson needed an hour and 38 minutes before he carved out a 6-4, 7-6 (3) win, as he also endured 14 aces and a 82% win ratio of first serves for his opponent.
Having made the semifinal at the Surbiton Challenger last week, Thompson does look like he’s well-prepared for the grass court swing but his real test will come now against a player whose game is well-modelled for this surface.
