Paul Has No Problems against Bonzi

Featuring in his first match of the season on grass, Paul needed a mere 65 minutes to clinch a victory in the opening round of the competition here in Stuttgart.

He defeated Benjamin Bonzi 6-3, 6-4 in a match that saw the American face no break-points on the back of having lost a mere four points on his own serve. That’s right, he lost four points spread across the nine games where he served!

This follows a quite underwhelming clay court swing before this, where he won just two of the seven matches he played.

Paul has a good track in the limited time he’s had on grass too in his career. He had made successive quarterfinals at the Queen’s Club and Eastbourne competitions last year but reserved his best for the last when he entered the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Struff Eases Past Zhizhen

Struff was 9/20 to win his opener against Zhizhen Zhang and while he did have some trouble in the second set, the German needed a mere 61 minutes to make it through.

Starting out the week ranked 24th in the world – his career-best ranking – Struff was a 6-1, 6-4 winner after starting out with a loss of serve.

That was the only time he dropped his service in the match as Struff caressed through the next six games in a row to grab the first set. In the second, it needed Struff a break in the third game to take the lead and from that point he did not look back.

He will now hope to take that one step further to emulate his semifinal showing at this very tournament in 2019. Of course, he had defeated Denis Shapovalov in that edition and will need to do the same to Paul here.

Paul v Struff Prediction and Tip

Paul’s record on grass and the manner in which he came through in the opener speaks volumes about how straightforward this could be.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Paul to win: 3/5
  • High Risk Tip: Paul to win in straight sets: 6/4
