Boulter Routs Appleton

In an all-Brit battle, it was the much more experienced and higher-ranked Boulter who came through against Emily Appleton in her first round here at Nottingham.

Boulter was on court for an hour and 12 minutes for her 6-1, 6-3 win, which saw her drop her serve twice in the encounter.

The first came in the opening set when she had already taken a 5-0 lead and was about to serve to bagel Appleton. She then went 4-1 up in the second set but dropped her serve in the seventh game before motoring away with an easy break to love and wrapping up the contest.

This follows a semifinal appearance at the ITF Surbiton competition on grass in the lead-up to the start of this grass swing for Boulter.

Snigur Shocks Haddad Maia

It was expected to be a one-sided first round contest between Snigur and Beatriz Haddad Maia. In the end it turned out to be exactly that but not how one expected it to go.

Snigur, who has never been in the top 100 on the WTA Rankings, stunned Haddad Maia in straight sets to enter the second round of the tournament.

In a match lasting an hour and 19 minutes, Snigur came away a 6-4, 6-3 winner despite dropping her serve twice in the encounter.

The first set proved to be a cagey battle with just one break of serve separating the two contestants. It came in seventh game for Snigur who then held on to take the lead.

In the second, three successive breaks kick-started the set before Haddad Maia lost her serve again in the seventh game. While Snigur was unable to hold her next serve to clinch the win, she broke for the third time in the set to ensure there would be no way back into the contest for Haddad Maia.

With that kind of a scalp under her belt, Snigur will start off with a lot of confidence.

Boulter v Snigur Prediction and Tip

This is an interesting one with Boulter starting off a bookmakers’ favourite at 2/5. We believe Snigur has a very good chance of grabbing this and could run away with this encounter.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 2/5
  • High Risk Tip: Snigur to win: 7/4
