Kudermetova was leading Alison Riske 6-3, 3-0 in the first round when her opponent retired from the match. And in the second round, the Russian dropped a mere four games before clinching her place in the last eight again.
In beating Carol Zhao in a mere 70 minutes, Kudermetova had ensured she would be playing in the quarterfinal here again, something she has done on each of her previous three occasions. On two of those, she had also gone ahead to make it to the semifinals.
The Russian broke Zhao thrice in the first set to signal her intentions and while she was broken while serving for a 3-1 lead, Kudermetova came back to grab a 4-2 lead. Soon after she was serving for the match and she won it off her first match-point.
This follows a good start to the grass season which had followed her first round loss at the French Open.
Kudermetova will now hope to make it three semifinal appearances in a row at this tournament.

Naef Continues to Surprise
Naef is just 17 years old and has already won five ITF titles spread over the 2022 and 2023 season. And yet, not much was expected from her when she took to court in both her first two rounds of matches because of the fact she hadn’t ever played on grass before.
And in both the matches, Naef fell behind early, losing the first set 3-6 to Venus Williams and Caty McNally.
While one could have still expected her to make a comeback against the 42-year-old Venus, not too many thought she would do that against the 1/4 pre-match favourite McNally.
And that’s exactly what she did, coming back to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a shade over two hours.
In a match filled with breaks of serves – which is a bit surprising for grass-court competitions – Naef overcame her opponent’s serve a whopping six times. Where she edged McNally out was getting a slightly higher first serves in, slightly higher first serve win percentage and again, a slightly higher percentage of second serves won too.
She will hope she can continue this run against Kudermetova too.

Seems like a straightforward one for Kudermetova who can be expected to clinch this in two despite her opponent’s fighting qualities.
