World no. 12 Frances Tiafoe ousted Marton Fucsovics in the semifinal of the Stuttgart Open on Saturday to reach a seventh career final and a second final in 2023.

Tiafoe had won his second ATP title earlier this year in Houston.

On Saturday, the 25-year-old American  took the first set by getting the solitary break of the set in the fourth game. In the second set, Tiafoe saved six set points in the second set tiebreak, before registering a 6-3, 7-6 (13-11) victory.

Tiafoe was out-aced 3-14 in the match and also hit just 14 winners to Fucsovics’s 30.

However, he got the decisive break in the opening set and then won the key moment in the second set to oust the world no. 86.

Tiafoe, who had a first round bye in the tournament, had beaten Jiri Lehcka in the straight sets in the second round on Wednesday. He then edged out Lorenzo Musetti in a three-set quarterfinal on Friday.

In addition to winning the Houston Open title, Tiafoe was also a semifinalist at the Indian Wells Open. In addition he had also played a key role in the United States’ run to the title at the United Cup.

This will be Tiafoe’s first tour level final on grass. He had won a Challenger title on grass in Nottingham in 2021. Can he win his third title on Sunday?

Struff Rallies Past Hurkacz

World no. 24 Jan-Lennard Struff came back from a set down to beat fourth seed Hubert Hurkacz in an entertaining semifinal on Saturday.

Struff has been in fantastic form this year, and cheered on by the home crowd he made a remarkable recovery in the match after losing the first set to the Pole.

The German struck 11 aces in the match to Hurkacz’s 21. But he won 82% points on his first serve and converted 3 of 5 break points, while conceding just one break in the first set.

Struff won the one hour and 29 minute contest 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The German had won his first three rounds in straight sets. He defeated China’s Zhizen Zhang 6-1, 6-4 in the first round and then ousted fifth seed Tommy Paul 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5) in the second round, before beating Richard Gasquet 6-4, 7-5 in the quarterfinal.

Yet to win an ATP title, this is the third time when Struff has reached a final in his career. It is his second final in 2023. Earlier, he had reached the final in Madrid after having qualified for the main draw as a lucky loser.

This is going to be a close contest. Both players have been in tremendous form this year. While Tiafoe has a better record, Struff is the local hope and will have the crowd getting behind him. Expect a three-set contest with  Tiafoe edging past the German.
