Humbert Returns to Grass

Ugo Humbert was out of the top 100 last year but slowly the French player worked his way back to the top 50 where he belongs. This year has been full of good results with 24 wins in 40 matches and grass is likely to continue that trend.

He’s won trophies on the surface in the past and has 20-14 career record on it. So far this year Humbert played two matches beating Kubler in Den Bosch. He lost to Ruusuvuori in the next round but it was a 3-set match so pretty close.

His main strengths are the forehand and serve which is all you really need on grass. Confidence is back so he should be a tricky out for most players. In this one, he’s favoured simply because he’s the better player and no less comfortable on grass than Peniston.

His opponent played very well in the UK last year but this year has been very shaky in terms of his overall level so I don’t see it happening again.

Peniston Returns to Queen’s

Ryan Peniston had a dream run in Queen’s last year reaching the quarter-final which might be the highlight of his career so far. He took down Ruud in the first match and followed that up by beating Cerundolo losing to eventual finalist Krajinovic in the end.

It was a great run that allowed him to play some really good tennis after that but this year it’s been rather bleak. Peniston wasn’t able to play on the same level as before posting only 11 wins in 26 matches so far. It’s almost as if he hit his ceiling.

We should see him hit a higher level on grass simply due to familiarity with the surface but this is a matchup he’s not expected to win. He’ll need to play on the same level as last year and he’s yet to show anything close to that this season.

I just don’t see it happening and Humbert knows grass. He can’t surprise him.

Humbert v Peniston Prediction and Tip

Humbert is the better player, playing better right now with an equal amount of experience on grass. Take him to keep this simple.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Humbert to win 2-0: 4/6
