Svitolina in Decent Form
Since returning to the WTA Tour following her maternity leave, Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina has done rather well to regain some of that lost momentum.
At the time of her return in April, she was ranked outside the top 1000. Now, she is World No. 73 and looks on track to close the season inside the top 50 at the very least.
After a series of early and understandable defeats in Charleston, ITF Chiasso, and ITF Oeiras, she found her rhythm in the Saint-Malo Challenger in the form of a semifinal run.
Later on, Svitolina won the Strasbourg Open and followed that with a quarterfinal feat at the Roland Garros – where she defeated Daria Kasatkina, Martina Trevisan, and Anna Blinkova.
Elina’s record for the season now stands at 12-7. In Birmingham, she finds herself in a tricky draw as she is on a path to meet Barbora Krejcikova as early as round three. Nonetheless, as a semifinalist in the 2019 Wimbledon, Svitolina has shown confidence on grass courts and that can help her case.

Fruhvirtova in a Rut
Czech teenage prodigy Linda Fruhvirtova has been through somewhat of a slow spell of late.
She has arrived in Birmingham on the back of a four-match losing streak, stretching across the Madrid Open, Rome Open, WTA Rabat, and the French Open. In fact, except for the fourth-round appearance in the Australian Open, most of Fruhvirtova’s season has gone by in such early losses.
The 18-year-old, who is ranked World No. 58, is 9-12 for the season.
Clearly, Linda is building the form and experience needed for explosive results down the line. Last year, she did win the Chennai Open to announce her intentions strongly; in all likelihood, she is not a player who is to be underestimated.
Svitolina v Fruhvirtova Prediction and Tip
Svitolina starts as the favourite here but value bettors may want to consider backing Fruhvirtova for this, especially at the odds she is available. Expect a cracking affair that can see a few too many games.
