Schwartzman Returns to Grass with a Poor Season Behind Him

We have been saying it for a while that Schwartzman has had one of his most unforgettable seasons and not in a good way.

Before he entered the French Open, the Argentine looked to have lost his mojo completely and had registered a mere five wins from 21 matches in the entire season.

It was finally at Roland-Garros that Schwartzman came up with two wins in a row, having never done that in the 16 tournaments he had played this year before that. He reached the third round in the season’s second Grand Slam on the back of victories over Bernabe Zapata Miralles and Nuno Borges.

The trouble for Schwartzman is that supposed change in fortune has come this late in the season that clay court competitions have finished and he will now need to pick up from where he left off on grass.

And grass isn’t his favourite by any stretch – he has only eight career match wins on this surface to 14 defeats. This is why we could see more on-court grief for the Argentine before things get better.

McDonald Eases Through the Qualifiers

After a fine showing at the Rosmalen Open last week, McDonald continued to display some excellent tennis in the qualifiers of this tournament too to make it to the main draw.

What was even more fascinating than his qualifying victories over Jeremy Chardy and JJ Wolf was the way he got them to get to the first round.

On Friday last week, McDonald was involved in his quarterfinal in Rosmalen where he went down fighting to Rinky Hijikata. The very next day, McDonald faced his first qualifying opponent Chardy after having travelled from Netherlands to the London for that encounter.

He beat Chardy easily and then sent Wolf packing too to make it to another grass court main draw.

When McDonald faces Schwartzman on Monday, that will be his sixth match in seven days and it’s ample testimony to his fitness the way he’s gone about his business so far.

Schwartzman v McDonald Prediction and Tip

No doubting who the favourite is here with McDonald starting out at a 3/10 to win this but Schwartzman has that teeny-weeny chance of pushing his opponent hard given the possibility of exhaustion for the American.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 3/10
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
