Norrie Sends Kecmanovic on His Way

Starting out a 1/3 favourite in his opener in London, Norrie was stretched a little by Miomir Kecmanovic but found a way past him in straight sets in the end.

Norrie, who had made the third round at the French Open before coming into this Queen’s competition, was on court for an hour and 38 minutes before winning 6-4, 7-6 (5).

An early trade of breaks got the two to 2-2 in the first set before Norrie was forced to save five break-points in the fifth game. He went on to then add a second break of serve but this one came at a crucial juncture with Kecmanovic serving to stay in the set.

In the second, Norrie went 3-1 ahead only to drop his serve in the very next game.

At 6-5, Norrie then had a match-point on his opponent’s serve but it took four more match-points in the following tie-breaker to win the encounter.

Thompson Eases Past Popyrin

Such has been Thompson’s form on grass that it wasn’t too much of a surprise to see him carve out an easy first round win over fellow Aussie Alexei Popyrin.

Thompson, who had come into this tournament on the back of a semifinal appearance at the Surbiton Challenger and the proceeded to finish up as a runner-up at the Rosmalen Open last week, was a straight-set winner over Popyrin in the first round here.

He won 6-4, 6-4 in a match that lasted an hour and 31 minutes to march into this second round.

The Aussie was broken twice in the encounter, once in each of the two sets, but he was never behind the eight-ball and re-grabbed the initiative immediately after.

The manner in which Thompson has been playing on grass this season, it won’t be a surprise if he thinks he has a chance here.

Norrie v Thompson Prediction and Tip

Norrie might start off as a favourite but Thompson’s recent form gives him a good chance here. Expect him to grab a set at the very least.

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
