It is 2-0 t0 Venus. They last met in the WTA Finals of 2017, where she dismissed Ostapenko in three sets.

Williams Bags a Rare Win
Venus Williams turned 43 past Saturday. On Monday, she bagged a huge win by beating Camila Giorgi in the first round in Birmingham.
The marathon match went on for a little over three hours and saw Williams record her first top 50 win since 2019 with 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(8). It was an inspirational performance from the American, who played the match with a strapped knee. She could not move as well as she would have liked but gave it her all – which also included falling down early in the game but rising like a phoenix from the ashes.
As the senior most player on the WTA Tour right now, it is quite commendable to still see her going strong.
Venus has kept her participation on the down low for obvious reasons; she is 2-2 in 2023 with only two appearances – ASB Classic (round two) and the Libema Open (round one).
As for her pedigree, it hardly needs any introduction. Of her 83 WTA career finals, 9 have come on grass – all in Wimbledon.

Ostapenko Beats Noskova
Experienced Latvian Jelena Ostapenko had to work hard to earn her win. Playing the Czech teenager Linda Noskova, she found herself in a three-setter. The number two seed took the match 6-2, 5-7, 6-1, winning 81% of the points behind the first serve.
Now at 20-12, Ostapenko is coming off a mixed clay season. Except for her semifinal showing in the Italian Open, she lost rather early in the French Open, Madrid Open, and WTA Stuttgart.
She was relatively better on hard courts, where she was a quarterfinalist in the Australian Open and made it to round four in the Miami Open.
A two-time finalist in Eastbourne and two-time quarterfinalist in Wimbledon, Ostapenko will fancy her chances of a good run in Birmingham and other grass events.
Ostapenko v Williams Prediction and Tip
The current #17 will start as the favourite against Williams on account of her youth and momentum. Of course, Ostapenko has seen her fair share of surprising defeats in the past – most recent coming to Peyton Stearns in Paris – so it is not too impossible to imagine Williams pulling this one off.
The question is of her fitness and health – has she got it in her to give it her all again?
Tips:
- Low-Risk Tip: Ostapenko to win: 4/7
- Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 2/1
