Hurkacz Takes His Time in Round One

Having made the semifinal of the Stuttgart Open last week, Hurkacz returned to action here with a hard-fought opening win over Christopher Eubanks in the first round.

In a match lasting two hours and five minutes, Hurkacz frittered away four match-points in the second set and a further two in the decider before finally converting his seventh on offer to enter round two.

Hurkacz won 6-4, 6-7 (11), 6-3, registering his sixth victory in a row at this tournament. The 2022 champion was in the lead when he broke Eubanks in the seventh game of the opening set but failed to do that again in the entirety of the first and second set.

Still he had all those match-points in the tie-breaker that he squandered before quickly finding his way back in the second game of the decider. That was the break he needed to get going and from that point on Hurkacz held on to his serve to complete the win.

Can he now end Griekspoor superb run?

Griekspoor Makes it Six Wins in a Row

Griekspoor was coming into this tournament on the back of a title win in Rosmalen last week. It was his second title of both, his career and the season, and the only question was whether he had had enough time to recover and feature in his opener here.

It looked like he did as he raced to a straight-set win over Roberto Carballes Baena, in the process sealing his sixth victory in a row.

The now world number 29, having his this career-best ranking after that title last week, was on court for an hour and a half, and staved off some spirited fight from Carballes Baena in the second set to win it 6-2, 7-5.

Two early breaks of serves is all that Griekspoor needed to grab the first set and while he failed to get any early break in the second, he managed to hold on to his own serve too. Then in the 11th game he converted the third of his opportunities and served it out in the next to clinch the second round berth.

An extra day’s break between the matches would help the Dutchman too.

Hurkacz v Griekspoor Prediction and Tip

Hurkacz might be starting off a 1/2 favourite here but we think it would be a lot closer than that. Three sets could be par for the course.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Griekspoor to win a set: 8/15
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 25.5 games in the match: 5/6
